Through AMC10 (American Mathematics Competitions 10th grade) on Feb. 25, 2015, Nelson qualified for 2015 AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) as a 7th grader.

Nelson went to AIME on March 19, 2015 and scored top 25% among all 7th grade qualifiers.

The American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) is intended to provide further challenge and recognition, beyond that provided by the AMC 10 (American Mathematics Competitions 10th grade) or AMC 12 (American Mathematics Competitions 12th grade) , to the many high school students in North America who have exceptional mathematical ability. All students who took the AMC 12 and achieved a score of 100 or more out of a possible 150 or were in the top 5% are invited to take the AIME. All students who took the AMC 10 and had a score of 120 or more out of a possible 150, or were in the top 2.5% also qualify for the AIME.

The top scoring U. S. citizens and students legally residing in the United States and Canada (with qualifying scores, based on a weighted average) are invited to take the USAMO (United States of America Mathematical Olympiad).

Nelson won 4th place at Washington State Math Championship 7th grade individual contest on March 28, 2015. (His team won 2nd place in 7th grade team contest.)
